West Midlands inventor creates new flush valve that uses 50% less water

Now more than ever we need to reduce water consumption in order to safeguard water supplies for the future and to protect the environment, but savings aren’t that easy to come by, or are they?

The number of households in the UK has increased exponentially by around 13 million since the 1960’s. Almost half of the UK’s water is used domestically which means we are using more water than ever. In fact, the usage per person is estimated to be about 150 litres per day – that’s about 15 billion litres of water every day in the domestic market alone, a level that is simply not sustainable.

Did you know that 30% of a typical household’s water is used to flush the toilet? Based on an average household of 4, that’s 180 litres of pure clean water being flushed away every, single day.

Dual flush toilets were introduced about 15 years ago to help tackle this problem, but it has since become clear that they actually use more water! The dual flush buttons are often confusing and too small to push but more importantly the reduced water flow failed to remove the waste, meaning toilets are often flushed several times instead of one efficient flush.

After many years of research and working with the British government and test agencies, West Midlands inventor Mark Jones was asked to create a valve that would not only reduce water usage but would enable the toilet to flush more efficiently using less water – a challenge he readily accepted and achieved.

Unlike dual flush toilets, the patented Flush & Save valve actually improves the flush efficiency of the toilet. It does this by allowing air and water to be mixed creating a vortex which bubbles into the toilet pan clearing waste and helping to clean the toilet too. The effect is a more efficient flush using half of the water of a standard toilet. The revolutionary eco-friendly toilet valve is low cost, highly effective and can be retrofit or used in new installations.

The Flush & Save valve will flush a toilet with just 2.5 to 3 litres of water, saving a minimum of 3 litres of pure clean drinking water every flush. A standard toilet flush uses 6 litres of water (older toilets can use as much as 13 litres!)

This ground breaking valve also has the added benefit of being a non-return valve. It eliminates backflow and greatly reduces crossflow by shutting immediately after flushing. It will also fit all standard toilets and has been examined by British government test agencies and certified to have a lifespan of in excess of 30 years.

The Flush & Save valve is manufactured in the UK although owner Mark also collaborates internationally and is currently working on a project to offer the valves under licence in California and Dallas Texas.
