Binnies awarded place on United Utilities’ network modelling framework for AMP8

Binnies, a leading water and environmental engineering whole life cycle services provider, has been awarded a position on United Utilities’ AMP8 network modelling framework.

This critical framework will support United Utilities in delivering essential services across the North West of England, including enhancing flood resilience, optimising wastewater infrastructure and ensuring sustainable, high-quality water management.

The framework, valued at £42 million over an initial five-year term, includes options for a five-year extension plus an additional one-year extension, making it an 11-year strategic partnership. Through this engagement, Binnies will provide essential expertise across several key areas, including model maintenance, storm overflow investigations, supply and demand assessments, rainwater management, incident investigations and integrated urban drainage modelling.

Ed Gower, Binnies Technical Director – Network Modelling, commented on the appointment:

“We are delighted to be part of this significant framework that will drive resilient wastewater management solutions for United Utilities. We have a dedicated team in the North West, with expertise across multiple water companies, that will be focused on achieving the best outcomes for this framework. We will use a team of experts from both Binnies and RAA to deliver the framework, drawing on successes from other frameworks to bring best practice and innovation. RAA is an RSK company that specialises in hydraulic modelling, flood risk management and surface water management services, and its expertise will be instrumental in helping us achieve the high standards we are committed to.”

Binnies will focus on wastewater model maintenance and optimisation, addressing critical areas of water quality, flood prevention and storm overflow management. The framework includes the development and calibration of sophisticated models that reflect real-world urban drainage conditions, ensuring precise flood risk predictions and effective spill reduction strategies. This proactive approach supports United Utilities’ ongoing commitment to environmental compliance, regulatory standards and service resilience.

Successful completion of projects will require close collaboration with United Utilities’ internal teams, partners and stakeholders to ensure that solutions meet both operational requirements and regulatory standards. The framework’s ambitious targets are set to deliver innovative, cost-effective wastewater solutions that significantly improve network performance and minimise environmental impacts.
