Wastewater treatment works at Handcross in West Sussex and East Boldre Wastewater Treatment Works in the New Forest will make a difference in improving water quality leaving the sites.

At East Boldre the team have installed sand filters to add a final polish to the treated water, while at Handcross new pressurised multimedia tanks have been installed along with ferric dosing to improve water quality.

Overall the cost of the schemes is nearly £7m, with £3.7m being spent at East Boldre and £3m at Handcross.

The work is being carried out by contractor GTb, a joint venture between Galliford Try Environment and Binnies UK Ltd. It is part of Southern Water’s wider £3bn spending on improving its environmental performance.

Lee Hooper Project Manager for Southern Water, said:

“We’re pleased that we have got these projects finished in time for the New Year, all of the schemes will help our ongoing work to improve water quality, we’re looking forward to 2025 where we will look at further upgrades to sites across our region.”

Lee McGrattan, Project Manager for GTb, added:

“We’re delighted that these projects are now finished. We’re sorry for any disruption these works have caused but we’re looking forward to the benefits they will bring.”
