Dame Glenys Stacey has announced that she will not be seeking reappointment as Chair of the Office for Environmental Protection when her term ends in January 2026.
She has made the decision to step down from the role in order to prioritise time with her family. Dame Glenys took up the role of Chair of the then newly formed OEP in February 2021 working with the Interim Environmental Governance Secretariat before the OEP was fully established.
Dame Glenys said:
“I have hugely enjoyed being the inaugural chair of the Office of Environmental Protection, and I am proud of the organisation. I think it is well-established and already having notable impact. It is set fair.
“I find the job stimulating and extremely worthwhile, but I find myself at that point in my life where I should sensibly strike a different balance as between work and other things in my life, most especially my family.
“I have therefore decided not to seek re-appointment. My term runs for a little time yet, and I will continue to undertake my role as chair of the OEP as enthusiastically as ever, while my term runs.”

A solicitor by profession, Dame Glenys Stacey has a wealth of CEO and regulatory experience, having led the start-up or development of a number of public-sector organisations responsible for legal or regulatory services. She has previously served as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Probation, Chief Executive at Animal Health (now part of the Animal and Plant Health Agency), chair of the Professional Standards Authority and Chief Regulator at Ofqual.
In 2019, she chaired an independent review of farm regulation at the request of the then Secretary of State for Defra.
Dame Glenys was appointed Dame Commander of the British Empire in the New Year’s honours list in 2016 recognising her services to education. She was appointed Chair-designate of the OEP in December 2020 and appointed Chair on legal creation of the OEP.
