Stantec UK PAS2080 certified for projects across water, energy, and infrastructure

Stantec has broadened its PAS2080 certification to cover its water, energy, and infrastructure businesses in the United Kingdom & Ireland.

PAS2080 provides a common framework within the built environment, supporting organisations in reducing whole life carbon emissions produced throughout projects and programmes of work. It considers and promotes collaboration through the whole value chain, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and cost through intelligent planning, design, construction, and operation.

Stantec has previously been PAS2080 accredited for the water side of its business, in line with the 2023 revision published by the British Standards Institution (BSI). However, the expansion of its certification means that its projects across the energy, community development, and transport environments meet the international benchmark for responsible carbon management. The latest certification was awarded on the back of a robust audit process by the BSI, which examined projects, approaches, and tools used by the Company internally and for clients. In addition to overarching leadership and culture-building around sustainability and carbon management.

In 2024, Stantec was named in Time Magazine-Statista’s ranking of the world’s most sustainable companies and came top among its peer group. The Company works with virtually every water company in the United Kingdom, helping futureproof water and wastewater networks. In the UK and Ireland, the Company’s reach extends the entire built environment, with Stantec considered as being a pioneer in pumped storage hydropower, energy grid resilience, and nature-based solutions. The firm helps greenify and develop urban spaces, brings the public and private sectors together to create resilient communities, and supports the low carbon transition across every sector.

“We have been a strong advocate for PAS2080 principles for a long time, and this latest certification demonstrates our commitment to thorough and considered carbon management,” said Andy Bent-Marshall, Stantec’s discipline lead for sustainability and carbon management.

“Energy providers, water companies, local authorities and communities will all benefit from our sustainable approach to responsible development, and we’re delighted that the BSI recognises our methods as being in-keeping with best practices.”

Nancy MacDonald, Stantec’s UK and Ireland regional business lead for Infrastructure added: “As we gear up to deliver new communities and thousands of new homes across the country, this certification gives our clients further assurance that our ethos is in line with their sustainability goals.”

Stantec also worked with the BSI and an industry working group, supporting the development of the 2023 update to PAS2080. Adrian Johnson, Stantec’s executive technical director for sustainability, led the technical advisory panel, helping guide the direction of the updated standard.
