Southern Water has published its Final Draft Water Resources Management Plan, which sets out the water company we will provide secure and reliable water supplies for the future.
This crucial document – also known as our Final Draft WRMP24 – went live on Friday 30 May 2025, at the same time as it was sent to government for approval by the Secretary of State.
Fresh from the driest spring since 1852, and with water companies closely monitoring the health of their water resources, Southern Water said it’s more important than ever that we all use water wisely. The Environment Agency has identified that by 2050, almost 5 billion extra litres of water a day will be required to maintain public water supplies in England. More than half that need is in the South East.
Southern Water’s Final Draft WRMP24 outlines a number of projects it is developing to maintain water supplies across its region, including:
- Reducing leakage – the company cut leaks by around 18% last year and says it is working hard to continue at that rate
- Improving water efficiency among its customers, businesses and communities
- Developing new sources of water, such as water recycling, reservoirs, and transferring water from other areas of the UK

“We hope our plan gives our communities confidence in how we will keep taps and rivers flowing for generations to come.”
The final government-backed publication is expected to come in Autumn 2025.
