Waterwise expresses support for the interim report by the Independent Water Commission

Waterwise, the independent voice for water efficiency across the UK, has expressed its support for the interim report by the Independent Water Commission, emphasising the critical need for enhanced government direction and regulatory reform in the water sector.

“We welcome the interim report of the Commission and appreciate the collaborative efforts with Sir Jon and his team. The report reflects the current challenges we see in the water sector in England and Wales.

“We are particularly encouraged by the recommendation for a more directive role for the government. This aligns with our call for addressing the democratic deficit and the need for more impactful Strategic Policy Statements. Current arms-length approaches have not delivered the necessary water efficiency outcomes, as seen in the gap between stated government priorities and legislative commitments – water efficiency is one example of this.”

Waterwise also highlighted the report’s acknowledgment of demand management priorities – something that had strong support within the call for evidence responses.

Nicci continued: “Nothing happens without water, and we are delighted that the interim report endorses this – and clearly from the responses received this is something those responding to the consultation have championed too.

“We are facing a critical water shortage in the UK. In England, by 2050, there will be a daily gap of 5 billion litres between supply and demand, if we do nothing – representing over a third of current daily water use.”

As drought was announced last week in the North West of England and with the Met Office confirming that spring 2025 has broken historical climate records for warmth and sunshine across the UK, Waterwise stressed the urgency of addressing these issues and looked forward to the Commission’s final report where the interventions needed to support the long-term resilience of our water supplies will be detailed.

Nicci concludes: “This review is a crucial opportunity for the sector. We urge the UK and Welsh governments to take decisive action, placing water efficiency at the heart of their strategies.”
