2nd reading of the Chalk Streams Bill is due in Parliament today

A 2nd reading of the Chalk Streams Bill is due in Parliament today (20 June, 2025).

The Private Members’ Bill was introduced by Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Green in October 2024 during the 2024–25 session.

Its purpose is to create a new category of protected habitat for chalk streams—legally shielding them from pollution, over‑abstraction, encroachment, and other damage.

Chalk streams are extremely rare with ~200 globally, 85% of which are in England. It is believed only about 37% meet ecological standards, with issues from pollution, over‑abstraction, and development impact.

As a Presentation Bill, it needs unanimous consent at 2nd reading to advance — meaning it’s unlikely to become law without cross‑party support.
