Anglian Water continues to make positive progress in Wellingborough

Anglian Water has reached the halfway point of its major upgrade work at a Water Recycling Centre (WRC) near Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.

Wellingborough WRCIn November 2023, Anglian Water released its Thriving East report which found that Northamptonshire will face an 11% increase in population growth by 2043, with the county set to face significant pressures accommodating housing and infrastructure growth.

To prepare for this growth, the water company began a £35 million investment into the site earlier last year, which included the installation of new equipment to improve the current water recycling process, create additional capacity and remove even more phosphorous from wastewater.

This equipment will help prevent harmful algae growth and improve water quality in local watercourses.

Work has progressed well with the installation of four sequential batch reactor (SBR) tanks  which will provide an extra 413l/s of additional capacity at the site. The next stages of the project include completing the installation of their phosphorous removal system and commissioning the assets for use.

Wellingborough WRCAndrea Jowett, Project Delivery Manager for the scheme said:

“Schemes like this are vital to enable us to keep up with the growing population in Wellingborough and the surrounding area.

“We’re pleased to say we’re making good progress on this project, making us prepared to protect the local environment for the years to come.

“But our work won’t stop there – as part of our next business plan worth around £10bn our proposals will see us double our environment investment, making it our largest programme ever.”
