Northumbrian Water to invest almost £6.5m at County Durham wastewater treatment works

Northumbrian Water is extending and upgrading the treatment works at Kelloe in County Durham with an investment of almost £6.5m, which the company says will deliver benefits for the Coxhoe Beck, as well as other watercourses downstream.

The work, which will be carried out by Northumbrian Water’s partner Esh-Stantec, is due to start in October 2022, and is expected to take 20 months to complete.

The work at Kelloe is in addition to an £11m investment in upgrades to the company’s network and sites in and around the nearby Pittington and Sherburn areas. Work started on this project in August and will result in improvements to water quality in the Coalford and Sherburn Becks and watercourses they flow into.

Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, Dean Thompson, said:

“The upgrades at Kelloe represent another significant investment in delivering resilient services for this part of County Durham and improved water quality for the local becks, streams and ultimately the River Wear.

“The event at Kelloe Primary School will be an opportunity for people to find out more about what we are doing and why, and we look forward to meeting customers there.”
