Lords Committee begins Ofwat inquiry evidence sessions with Philip Dunne MP

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will begin its evidence sessions on the work of Ofwat, by hearing from Rt Hon Philip Dune MP, Chair of the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee, and expert consultants.

The sessions will take place on Tuesday 21 June and can be followed live on Parliament TV.

Giving evidence at 10:30am will be:

  • Rt Hon Philip Dunne
Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee

Giving evidence at 11:30am will be:

  • Professor Ian Barker
Managing Director at Water Policy International Ltd
  • Annabelle Ong
    Director at Frontier Economics

Possible questions include:

  • Does Ofwat have the necessary powers and resources to meet its objectives?
  • Does Ofwat receive sufficient strategic guidance from the Government on how to balance its objectives, including in relation to balancing the need for investment with the level of consumer bills?
  • Should Ofwat be doing more to ensure that money in the water sector flows into investment, rather than out into executive pay and dividends?
  • Do water companies truly fear the consequences of regulatory interventions, such as fines, or are they seen as a cost of doing business?
