IEMA appoints two new Board Directors

The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) has announced the appointment of two new members to its Board.

Toby Shaw becomes an executive director within his role of Director of Marketing and Strategy at IEMA, while Margaret Swiderska has been appointed as a new non-executive director – bringing added financial acumen to the board.

IEMA chair Richard Carter said:

“IEMA is moving through exciting times – growth is excellent and we have some important projects underway – so I’m ever so pleased to bring Margaret and Toby onto the board.

“Their expertise and experience are perfectly aligned to our strategic plans, and I’m quite certain that members will join me in giving them the warmest of welcomes.”

Margaret is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland having qualified with Deloitte. She spent over 10 years supporting clients from a variety of sectors including not-for-profit, pension schemes and global financial institutions.

In her current role as a head of group finance for MDDUS, she focuses on discretionary insurance, investments management and property, including Environmental, Social and Governance considerations. Margaret has a passion for process improvements and helping organisations thrive through ensuring that sound and ethical governance and financial management processes are adopted.

Outside of work Margaret is on the board of Glasgow Clyde College and enjoys running, yoga, dancing, skiing and recently took up martial arts.

Margaret Swiderska said:

“I am thrilled to join IEMA as it aligns with my passion for environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and corporate governance (ESG).

“IEMA’s commitment to advancing sustainability practices and promoting inclusion and diversity within the environmental profession resonates deeply with my values. I look forward to contributing to IEMA’s initiatives and collaborating with like-minded professionals to drive positive change in the sustainability profession.”

Toby honed his marketing expertise in some of the world’s most influential corporations, with a track record of success across a diverse portfolio spanning Nestlé, Heineken, Sony, and Royal Caribbean.

Toby brings strategic leadership to all facets of marketing, creative development, and brand management and added overall IEMA strategy to his remit in 2023, having been director of commercial marketing since September 2020, where he has overseen significant membership growth and global outreach.

Beyond the boardroom, he is an advocate for the power of personal choices in driving wider environmental change.

Toby Shaw said:

“I am delighted to join the board. IEMA members are truly a force for good in the world and their work exemplifies the potential for businesses to lead the way in creating a more sustainable future.

“We must make every job greener, and IEMA can provide the route map to get there for companies right across the global economy.”
